Welcome to the Tokiphon FAQ
Parents often ask: What is Tokiphon? How does it work? Why do children laugh while unlocking tricky reading patterns? This page holds the answers.
Tokiphon is a research-based online phonics program created for children ages 6 to 10. We guide learners step by step through the journey of reading, from the very first alphabet sparks to the puzzles of blends, r controlled vowels, and multisyllabic words. Families around the world trust Tokiphon because it blends science, play, and imagination in every lesson.
Picture it like this:
- A lantern in the dark guiding each new reader
- A colorful carnival of games and graphics that make practice feel like play
- A campfire circle where confidence is built one story at a time
- A park map where every skill mastered brings your child closer to fluent reading
Tokiphon is not just a class. It is a world of reading adventures where children grow in skill, joy, and confidence.
How it Works?
What is Tokiphon and how is it different from other reading programs?
Tokiphon is a scientifically designed online phonics program that walks children step by step through the six essential building blocks of reading: alphabet knowledge, letter sounds and patterns, blends and digraphs, r-controlled vowels, vowel-consonant E, and vowel teams. We also cover multisyllabic decoding, compound words, suffixes, and short and long vowel sounds.
What makes Tokiphon unique is the way we blend research with creativity. Lessons use quirky artwork, interactive spinners, games, and weekly Gearlings storytime — an exclusive story series where plushie characters explore a magical paper world. Children don’t just learn to read, they experience reading as an adventure full of humor, visuals, and imagination.
How do online classes work for young children?
Classes are short, lively, and carefully designed for attention spans. Each lesson is 20 minutes long, delivered in a small group setting. Kids stay engaged through visuals, interactive games, and camp-themed activities that turn reading practice into play.
What age group is Tokiphon best suited for?
Tokiphon works best for children ages 6–10 who are either just starting to read in English or who need to build stronger foundations. The program is especially supportive for multilingual learners, giving them a clear pathway to fluent reading.
How do you keep kids engaged during class?
We combine structure with fun. Rules keep things clear, but every class is packed with graphics, wheels, stickers, games, and craft-style visuals that feel exciting. Sessions are only 20 minutes, which means kids stay focused from start to finish without burnout.
Do parents need to sit with their child during lessons?
Parents are welcome to observe but not required to participate. Children learn best when they engage directly with the teacher and group, so we ask parents to simply stay nearby to help with tech or listen in if needed.
Schedule & Pricing
How many classes are included each week?
Each week includes three 20-minute classes. Two small group sessions have just 2–3 children, and one Friday session brings the groups together for up to 6 kids. That equals one full hour of guided reading instruction per week.
What class times are available?
We offer evening classes designed for families in Japan, South Korea, and Europe. These times match family routines so children can learn after school without stress. (Special Saturday options are occasionally available for the United States.)
How much does Tokiphon cost, and how is payment handled?
Classes cost 15 USD per session and are billed monthly in advance. Payments are handled through our website with Shopify Pay, or PayPal in the local currency. Tokiphon makes it easy for parents around the world to enroll securely.
Can I try a class before committing?
Every child begins with a $15 assessment. This one-on-one session evaluates their reading level and ensures they’re placed in the right group. The assessment also gives families a chance to see how Tokiphon works. If you enroll, the fee is credited to your first month.
What is your cancellation or refund policy?
Parents can cancel before the next month’s billing date. Since we reserve spots for each child, classes are non-refundable once the month has started. This policy keeps our groups stable and fair for all families.
Tech & Access
What equipment does my child need to join?
A computer is preferred, though a tablet is also acceptable. Every child must have webcam access so the teacher can see them during class. For sound, we recommend using a headset with a built-in microphone to ensure clear audio and avoid feedback. Phones are discouraged because the screen is too small for reading activities.
Do I need to download any special software?
No. All Tokiphon classes run on Google Meet, which you can access through a simple link provided before class.
What happens if the internet cuts out during class?
If your child’s internet drops, the class continues for the others. If the tutor experiences technical issues, Tokiphon provides supplementary materials so no learning time is wasted.
Can classes be accessed on a phone or tablet?
Yes, classes can be joined on tablets, but we recommend computers for the best experience. Phones are discouraged because of the limited screen size.
Is my child’s privacy protected during online sessions?
Yes. Tokiphon classes are private, secure, and never recorded. In small groups, other children may see only the name, video, or background you choose to share. Parents can set up a neutral background to add an extra layer of privacy.
Progress & Support
How do you track my child’s reading progress?
Every 15 lessons, children retake a placement-style assessment. This measures skill growth and ensures they are on track to master phonics, decoding, and reading fluency. Based on the results, we adjust the learning plan or add extra support as needed.
Will I receive regular updates about my child’s improvement?
Yes. After each 15-lesson cycle, we hold a private parent meeting to review progress and set new goals. If important developments come up in between, parents are notified by email.
How can I support my child’s learning at home?
Parents can help by providing English books at home, encouraging daily reading, and reinforcing skills from class. Even a few minutes a day helps children grow in confidence and fluency.
What if my child is struggling or falling behind?
We adapt. At Tokiphon, we adjust pacing, provide extra practice activities, and share personalized strategies to help children succeed. Every child learns differently, and we support them at their own pace.
How do you communicate with parents if there are concerns?
We communicate through email and scheduled Google Meet sessions. All meetings are private, secure, and focused on your child’s success.
